THE BOURBON STREET STOMPERS
The Hottest JAZZ in Europe
Third Costa Blanca Tour
Lovers of classic New Orleans jazz will be delighted to know that the fabulous "Bourbon Street Stompers", who made a brilliantly successful first visit to the Costa Blanca in 2009, and again in 2011, will be back again. This time the 7-piece band will be playing on October 12, 2012, performing in the Teulada Moraira Auditorium, as well as in the La Rambleta in Valencia, October 13.
Reputed to be the best band of its type in Europe, it surprisingly originates not from the USA or the UK, but from Germany.
The "Stompers" were founded in Essen in May, 1993, when they were still teenagers, fascinated by the hiss and crackle of the old New Orleans jazz recordings.
Today, they are still together as a band. However, as jazz musicians they do not earn a "fortune", so the 7 Stompers all have a day job as well. They no longer all live in Essen, so each gathering is somewhat of a logistical accomplishment, as they arrive from Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Brussel and Essen, to perform together.
For their third visit to the Costa Blanca they will be joined for the second time by jazz vocalist Betty Berent from Hamburg.
Elisabeth (Betty) Berent, age 27, discovered her passion for jazz and blues as a child, and went on to become a professional in the art. She has worked her way up to the top of the German jazz scene, singing alongside veteren jazz pianist Gottfried Boettger, and performing at venues such as the Cotton Club and the Stage Club in Hamburg.
In June of last year, Betty sang with The Bourbon Street Stompers at a jazz concert in Dusseldorf before a crowd of 1.500, who were blown away by her talent. As a result, she was asked to accompany the band on its next tour to the Costa Blanca, and she readily accepted. This October concert will be her second concert in the Auditorium of Teulada Moraira.

Out of 48 competing ensembles from across the USA and around the world, the Old City String Quartet won the coveted Grand Prize of the 2010 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. Joel Link (violin), Bryan Lee (violin), Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt (viola) and Camden Shaw (cello) are from The Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition the quartet participated in a Winner's Tour of the Midwestern United States last October, and performed several concerts in the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy in 2011.
The Old City String Quartet has won the praise of some of the greatest chamber musicians of our time. Formed at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, the ensemble draws from the musical lineage of both the Vermeer and Guarneri String Quartets, but brings a youthful enthusiasm and musical conviction to the repertoire that is truly its own. Joseph Silverstein said of the group: "The Old City String Quartet is one of the finest string quartets I have ever heard. I expect to see the ensemble reach international acclaim." The ensemble's recording of the Mendelssohn and Debussy quartets, released in 2009 by the audiophile label Unipheye Music©, was awarded the Blue Moon award by the highly respected audiophile website 6moons.com. The album's review by David Kan proclaimed that "the maturity in these interpretations is phenomenal and disproportionate to the age [of the group.]" Members of the Quartet have appeared as soloists with some of the world's finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Kansas City Symphony and BBC Concert Orchestra.

The Dover Quartet
Concert Auditorium Teulada-Moraira
May 26, 2013
(with Roberto Diaz and Curtis student pianist, Alex Ullman)
Considered one of the most remarkably talented young string quartets ever to emerge at such a young age, the Dover Quartet (formerly known as the Old City String Quartet) was the Grand Prize-winner of the 2010 Fischoff Competition. Formed at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2008, when its members were just 19 years old, the Quartet draws from the musical lineage of both the Vermeer and Guarneri Quartets, but brings a youthful enthusiasm and musical conviction to the repertoire that is truly its own. The Strad recently raved that the Quartet is "already pulling away from their peers with their exceptional interpretative maturity, tonal refinement and taut ensemble."
The Dover Quartet has won prizes at the London International String Quartet Competition, and has taken part in festivals such as Artosphere, La Jolla SummerFest, and the Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival. Recent performances include those for such influential series as the Washington Performing Arts Society, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, Peoples' Symphony, Schneider Concerts, Kneisel Hall, and the Houston Friends of Chamber Music. The Dover Quartet will be continuing their close collaboration with violist Roberto Díaz on an extensive European tour in spring 2013 including performances throughout Germany, Austria, Spain, and the United Kingdom.
Members of the Quartet have appeared as soloists with some of the world's finest orchestras, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, Kansas City Symphony and BBC Concert Orchestra. The group’s recording of the Mendelssohn and Debussy quartets (Unipheye Music) was awarded the Blue Moon Award by the highly respected audiophile website 6moons.com. The album's review by David Kan proclaimed that "...the maturity in these interpretations is phenomenal and disproportionate to the age [of the group]."
The ensemble worked intensively at the Curtis Institute with such renowned chamber musicians as Shmuel Ashkenasi, Arnold Steinhardt, Joseph Silverstein, and Peter Wiley, and is currently the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas.

TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY BOURBON STREET PARADE
The fabulous BOURBON STREET STOMPERS return to the Costa Blanca in October,
accompanied for the first time by New Orleans vocalist JOSHUA STEWART.
Believed to be the best classic New Orleans jazz group in Europe, if not the World, this 7-piece ensemble from Essen in Germany, made its first appearance on the Costa Blanca in 2009 before an international audience of almost 1,000 enthusiasts at The Palau in Altea. They returned by popular demand in 2011 and again last year, and were again an outstanding success in Valencia, Torrevieja and Teulada.
This year the group is celebrating its 20th anniversary, and a new dimension has been added thanks to the innovation of the tour organisers, Concerts Costa Blanca, perhaps better known for their classical concerts.
Last year they presented at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira a superb concert by the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, USA. The ensemble included a wonderful opera singer, Joshua Stewart, who was about to join the Munich Opera House. Born in New Orleans, Joshua gave beautiful renditions of negro spirituals, and further investigation revealed that before starting his operatic career he had sung with New Orleans jazz bands in the very birthplace of jazz, including the legendary Preservation Hall. CCB lost no time in introducing him to The Bourbon Street Stompers, and they are immensely proud to announce that he will sing with the Stompers on their Costa Blanca tour in October this year.
The Stompers and Joshua will begin their tour at the huge new Auditorio de la Diputacion in the City of Alicante on Friday 11 October, and booking information will be announced shortly. On Saturday 12 October they will appear at the Auditori de Teulada Moraira. Tickets at 12 eu may be purchased at the box office from Wednesday to Sunday between 1100 and 1300, and 1800 to 2000; also at the Ayuntamiento de Teulada from Monday to Friday between 0900 and 1500; and at the Espai La Senieta in Moraira from 0900 to 1500; or for this concert you can book through INSTANTICKET on 902 444 300. Haochen Zhang, piano
"Such a combination of enchanting, sensitive lyricism and hypnotizing forcefulness is a phenomenon encountered very rarely." - Ury Eppstein, The Jerusalem Post
Since his gold medal win at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2009, 23-year-old Chinese pianist Haochen Zhang has captivated audiences in the United States, Europe, and Asia with a unique combination of deep musical sensitivity, fearless imagination, and spectacular virtuosity. His return to Fort Worth as part of the 2010–2011 Cliburn Concerts series was lauded by the Dallas Morning News as "the kind of program you'd expect from a seasoned master, served up with dazzling virtuosity where wanted and astonishing sophistication elsewhere" and hailed among the top 10 performances of 2010 by both the Dallas Morning News and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. His Boston debut under the auspices of the Celebrity Series met with high praise by audiences and critics, making the year-end lists as part of the Boston Phoenix's top 10 classical music stories of the year. Boston Globe critic Matthew Guerrieri remarked that Mr. Zhang displayed "poetic temperament as much as technical power... [he is] a pianist with ample reserves of power whose imagination seems nonetheless most kindled by subtle delicacy." In summer 2012 Mr. Zhang made his debut at the Piano Festival La Roque d'Antheron for which he received a rave review from Diapason. In April 2013, Haochen made his Munich Philharmonic debut under the baton of Maestro Maazel followed by a sold out four-city tour in China.
A passionate and insightful programmer, Mr. Zhang continues to cultivate his reputation through major performances and debuts every year. Highlights of the 13-14 season include an artist residency at the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra with whom he will play four different concerti along with two chamber concerts; debut with Kyushu Symphony in Japan, Seattle Symphony as well as Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire; return performances with Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and a number of recitals and chamber concerts throughout North America and Japan. In June 2014 Haochen will tour China as soloist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Robertson.
Mr. Zhang is also an avid chamber music player, collaborating with such colleagues as the Shanghai String Quartet.
In past seasons, he has performed with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Munich Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Israel Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Macau Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra of the Dominican Republic. A prolific recitalist, in the U.S. Mr. Zhang has performed at Spivey Hall, La Jolla Music Society, Celebrity Series of Boston, CU Artist Series, Cliburn Concerts, Krannert Center, Wolf Trap Discovery Series, Lied Center of Kansas and UVM Lane Series, among others. International tours have taken him to cities including Beijing, Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Berlin, Munich, Dresden, Rome, Tivoli, Bogota and Belgrade.
Mr. Zhang's Cliburn Competition performances were released to critical acclaim by Harmonia Mundi in 2009. He is also featured in Peter Rosen's award-winning documentary chronicling the 2009 Cliburn Competition, A Surprise in Texas. His complete competition performances are available on www.cliburn.tv.
Mr. Zhang is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where he studied under Gary Graffman. He was previously trained at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the Shenzhen Arts School, where he was admitted in 2001 at the age of 11 to study with Professor Dan Zhaoyi.

PRESS RELEASE
STOMPERS BACK IN TOWN
Lovers of classic New Orleans jazz will be pleased to know that, courtesy of Concerts Costa Blanca, the enormously popular Bourbon Street Stompers will be back in October for what promises to be their most exciting visit to date.
The internationally renowned Stompers, from Essen in Germany, are now in their 21st year, and this will be their fifth visit to the Costa since 2009. They will be accompanied again by New Orleans jazz and opera vocalist Joshua Stewart, who made his debut with the group here on the Costa last year, as well as female vocalist Betty Berent from Hamburg, who accompanied the band on their 2012 tour. Josh and Betty have never sung together before, or even met. Similarly, last year Josh and the band met for the first time just an hour before their first performance but such is their professionalism that you would have thought they had been together for years.
The tour opens on Friday 17 October at the wonderful Palau in Altea, where the group made its first Spanish appearance before almost 1,000 people in 2009. On Saturday 18 October they play once again at the magnificent Auditori de Teulada-Moraira, having filled it to capacity on three previous occasions; and on Sunday 19 October they bow out at the huge Auditori de Diputacion de Alicante (ADDA), where they played for the first time last October. Unfortunately, Joshua Stewart's Munich Opera House commitments mean that he is unable to perform in Alicante on the Sunday but Betty Berent will sing at all three concerts.
Box office details are as follows:
Altea: ring 96 688 1924 on Thursdays between 1630 and 1930; or buy at the door from 2 hrs before performance, or on-line at palaualtea.reservaentradas.com ***
Teulada: at the Auditori box office on Wed to Sat between 1100 and 1300, and 1800 to 2000; or at the ayuntamiento in Teulada and the Espai La Senieta in Moraira on Mon to Fri between 0900 and 1500; or on-line at Instanticket on 902 444 300 or at www.instanticket.es ***.
Alicante: through Instanticket on 902 444 300 or at www.instanticket.es ***; or at the door from 2 hours before performance.
***On-line booking may not be possible until closer to the performance dates.

PRESS RELEASE: EXTRA PERFORMANCE
STOMPERS SELL-OUT
Auditori de Teulada Moraira
Friday 30th OCTOBER 2015
Due to an overwhelming response,
we will run a second show from 17:00 h. - 19:00 h.
Cava and wine reception: 19:00 h. Meet and Greet Joshua Stewart.
The ever-popular classic New Orleans jazz band, The Bourbon Street Stompers, from Essen in Germany will be visiting Spain again this autumn, and Concerts Costa Blanca has advised that there are already very few seats left for the performance at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira on Friday 30 October even though there has not yet been any advertising other than to those on the CCB mailing list. So if you have not booked, now is the time to do so, and the box office details are given below.
In view of the tremendous demand for tickets, the organisers are considering a matinee performance on the same day, so if you do not manage to get a ticket for the evening performance, by ringing 96 574 9023, you can reserve a place for the matinee if it does in fact come to fruition.
The Stompers, now in their 22nd year, were first brought to the Costa Blanca by local resident, Norman Dunnington, in 2009. They were given a standing ovation by the capacity audience of almost 1000 at the Palau in Altea, and in the subsequent years they have played at Teulada, Torrevieja, Alicante and Valencia, all to rapturous reviews. This year, in addition to playing again at Teulada, they will make their debut at the magnificent Auditorium de Palma de Mallorca on Sunday 1 November.
Two years ago Concerts Costa Blanca had the brilliant idea of inviting a special guest vocalist to sing with the band. He was Joshua Stewart, a powerful tenor who had just graduated from the prestigious Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and who had performed at the Auditori de Teulada-Moraira the year before. Joshua was born in New Orleans, and sang with jazz bands there before being recruited by the Curtis Institute and being trained as an opera singer. He returned by popular request to accompany the Stompers again last year, and both he and the band are looking forward to making it three in a row this year.

From 2011-2013 they served as the Juilliard Graduate Resident String Quartet, and for the 2014-2015 season they were selected as the Quartet in Residence by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
The Attacca Quartet recently completed a recording project of Haydn's masterwork "The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross," arranged by Andrew Yee and the Attacca Quartet. In his review for Gramophone, Donald Rosenberg wrote, "The Attacca Quartet explore the work's range of expressive moods with utmost sensitivity to nuance and interplay .... They triumph in every respect, and are captured in such vivid sound that no telling Haydn detail is allowed to go unheard."Thewholenote.com wrote, "It's easily the most satisfying string version of the work that I've heard."
In 2013, the quartet released the complete works for string quartet by John Adams on Azica Records. It was praised by Steve Smith of The New York Times as a "vivacious, compelling set," describing the Attacca Quartet's playing as "exuberant, funky, and ... exactingly nuanced." The Boston Globe also praised the release, stating, "Few [recent recordings] are as consequential as 'Fellow Traveler,' ... superb performances." The album was the recipient of the 2013 National Federation of Music Clubs Centennial Chamber Music Award. The quartet has been honoured with both the Arthur Foote Award from the Harvard Musical Association and the Lotos Prize in the Arts from the Stecher and Horowitz Foundation.
The 2016-2017 season began with a bang as the Attacca Quartet opened for rock superstar Jeff Lynne's ELO in two sold-out Radio City Music Hall performances. In addition, the quartet will be launching their new "Recently Added" series (first announced in a New York Times feature about the completion of their six-year traversal of all of Haydn's 68 string quartets). The new project is dedicated to living composers who they feel have added significantly to the string quartet canon. The first season is taking place at Brooklyn's National Sawdust and features the music of Caroline Shaw, Michael Ippolito and John Adams. At the same time, the Attacca will present an ongoing series at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manhattan entitled "Based on Beethoven," featuring performances of the complete Beethoven string quartets, paired with works inspired by Beethoven from the "Recently Added" series. The group will serve as the inaugural Ensemble-in-Residence at the School of Music at Texas State University during the 2016-2017 season and will appear in concerts and master classes throughout the United States and South America.
The Attacca Quartet has engaged in extensive educational and community outreach projects, serving as guest artists and teaching fellows at the Lincoln Center Institute, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Vivace String Camp in New York, the Woodlands ChamberFest in Texas, Virginia Arts Festival, Bravo! Vail Valley and Animato Summer Music Camp at Florida International University in Miami. Since 2006, they have performed in yearly benefit concerts supporting the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's efforts. The members of the Attacca Quartet currently reside in New York City. They are represented by Désirée Halac, Spain, Portugal and Latina America División of Baker Artists, LLC in New York City.
Review (extract) of his recent concert in the USA
http://www.ocregister.com/articles/zhang-741101-movement-piano.html
"Well, they had a tiger by the tail, that's for sure," said my seatmate on Thursday night at Segerstom Concert Hall. The tiger in question was pianist Haochen Zhang, who had just concluded Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in what seemed like world-record speed. The "they" would have been conductor Carl St.Clair and the Pacific Symphony, who did their level best to match Zhang's energy and velocity, which in the third movement threatened to break the piano free of the earth's gravitational pull and take the entire band with it.
Zhang, a child prodigy and 2009 Van Cliburn Competition winner, easily wears the mantle of the young, world-class soloist. Slight and intense, the 26-year-old wunderkind is fascinating to watch. Zhang's technique is unorthodox: he sometimes hammers individual keys with a scrunched-up thumb and forefinger, and at times his hands are splayed flat across the keys during fast passages, a real no-no according to piano teachers. His octave technique looks all wrong, too; his wrists seem too stiff and inflexible.
But as my old jazz teacher used to say, it ain't wrong if it comes out right. Zhang's sound, for the most part, is meticulously clean (there were some blurred passages in the final movement, mainly because his tempi were approaching the speed of light).
